1. We show possession in English with the genitive form of a noun.
- add "s to singular nouns and names not ending in -s: a boys tie, Toms hat
- adds to singular nouns ending in -s: an actresss career, a waitresss job
- adds to irregular plural nouns: childrens games, sheeps wool
- add an apostrophe () after the -s of regular plurals: the girls uniforms
- adds to names ending in -s: Charless address, St. Jamess Park
2. When we want to show possession with things, we can use of: the leg of the table (or we use a compound noun: the table-leg).
We uses and s with some non-living things:
- fixed phrases: the earths surface, the ships company, journeys end
- time phrases (singular): an hours journey, a days work, a months salary
- time phrases (plural): two hoursjourney, two days work, two months salary.
